How Many Granny Squares Do I Need for a Blanket?
Open the granny square calculator
A throw (50 × 60 in) made of 6 in squares needs 80 squares: 8 across and 10 down. Our granny square calculator works it out for any blanket and square size, and the yarn too.

How to use it
- Choose the blanket size, or type your own.
- Measure one finished, blocked square, border included, and type its size.
- Choose your yarn weight to see how much yarn the whole blanket takes.
Common blanket sizes
- Baby: 30 × 36 in
- Crib or toddler: 42 × 52 in
- Throw: 50 × 60 in
- Twin: 66 × 90 in, full: 80 × 90 in, queen: 90 × 100 in, king: 108 × 100 in
The calculator's page has a full chart of how many squares each size needs, for 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 in squares.
Don't forget the joins and border
A border adds a few inches all round, so a blanket a little small before the border is fine. Joins with a raised ridge add about ¼ in each, which adds up across a big blanket.
