How Much Yarn Do I Need for a Crochet Blanket?
The quickest answer: a worsted-weight throw (50 × 60 in) in double crochet takes about 2,400 yards, or around 2,640 yd with a little spare. A baby blanket takes less than half that. Our yarn calculator works it out for any size, yarn and stitch.

How to use the calculator
- Pick what you're making: blanket, scarf, hat, cowl, shawl or dishcloth, then the size. Or choose “My own size” and type the width and length.
- Choose your yarn weight. The number is on the label (4 is worsted or aran). Not sure? Find it from the name on the label.
- Choose the main stitch. Single crochet uses the most yarn, granny squares and lace the least.
- Type the yards on one skein to see how many to buy.
Why the answer is an estimate
Yardage depends on your tension: someone who crochets tightly uses more yarn for the same blanket. The calculator adds 10% spare, which covers most people. To be sure, crochet a 4 in square, measure the yarn it took, and compare.
Buy it all at once
Buy every skein from the same dye lot (the lot number on the label): the next batch can be a slightly different shade, which shows in a blanket.
Making squares? The granny square calculator counts the squares and the yarn together.
