Granny Square is the first thing that all the crochet lovers learn. We call it basic, traditional or a classic Granny Square. So let us get back to our basic granny square, first of all, we will need 2 basic things a crochet hook and some yarn. We will recommend a hook size of 3.75mm or 4mm and above. Basically, the bigger hook the better since it will help you to learn crochet faster because a bigger hook makes sure you can work with yarn faster.
Here we have taken a 3.75mm hook since it is suitable for the yarn we have taken.
Things we will need to Crochet Basic Granny Square
- Crochet Hook Size: 3.75mm or more
- Yarn: Any 4 ply yarn
Further, we will also require a pair of scissors and a yarn needle. We will use 2 different colour since it will make easier for you to see all the rounds clearly. Also, the different colours will make it look beautiful.
Abbreviations:
Ch: chain
SS: slip stitch
dc: Double Crochet
We have taken 2 colours here and a 3.75 mm hook
The pattern for the Crochet Basic Granny Square will be as below:
Ch 4 join with the 1st chain with a SS forming a circle
Round 1:
Step 1: Ch 3 (This will be counted as your 1st dc),
Step 2: 2dc in circle,
Step 3: ch 3, 3 dc in circle
Step 4: repeat Step 3 twice
Step 5: Join with SS to the 1st dc you made (not chain 3 one but the 1st dc itself)
This completes first round of Crochet Basic Granny Square
You will have something like as a result of Round 1 with 12 stitches, since they are in a cluster of 3
ch 1 and cut the yarn, secure it by pulling the same
Round 2:
Take a new colour and make a slip knot, start with your hook in chain 3 space of 1st round
Step 1: ch 3, 2dc in chain 3 space of round 1
Step 2: ch 3, 3 dc in the same space
Step 3: ch 2, 3dc in the next chain 3 space
Step 4: Chain 3, 3dc in the same space
Step 5: Repeat Step 3 & 4 twice (repeat step 3 & 4 totally 2 times)
Step 6: ch 2 and join with a SS in 1st dc
This completes second round of Crochet Basic Granny Square
At the end of Round 2, you will have something like this with a total of 24 stitches, since they are in a cluster of 3
ch 1 and cut the yarn, secure it by pulling the yarn
Round 3:
Take colour of Round 1 and make slip knot, start in chain 3 space in the corner, because this will give a better look to our crochet basic granny square rather than starting from chain 2 space
Step 1: ch 3, 2dc in chain 3 space
Step 2: ch 3, 3dc in the same space
Step 3: ch 2, 3dc in the chain 2 space
Step 4: Ch 2, 3dc in the next chain 3 space
Step 5: chain 3, 3dc in the same space
Continue this as per the pattern till you reach where you started from, chain 2 and join with 1st dc with a SS you will have a total of 36 stitches.
Therefore we will take one chain less on the sides in comparison of corner chains. So, if we take 3 chains in corner we will take one chain less on the sides that is 2
Finally, secure the lose ends with help of a yarn needle.
