Flat Circle & Amigurumi Ball Calculator
Every round of a flat crochet circle (for coasters, rugs, hat crowns and bags) or an amigurumi ball, written out with stitch counts, for the size you want.
New to this? Read the guide, with an example
From your gauge swatch (rows count as rounds). Worsted: about 18 in sc, 12 in hdc, 8 in dc.
Amigurumi is worked tight: worsted with a 3.5 mm hook is about 20 sc per 4 in.
Fill in the size you want.
Stuff the ball before the last few rounds, then close the hole: thread the tail through the front loops and pull tight.
US terms: sc = single crochet, inc = 2 stitches in one, dec = 2 together. UK terms?
Why 6, 8 or 12 stitches?
A flat circle grows by the same number of stitches every round as it started with. Single crochet is short, so 6 is enough; half double crochet is taller and needs 8; double crochet needs 12 (or 11 plus the turning chain). Too few increases and the circle cups into a bowl; too many and it ruffles.
Round circles, not hexagons
If the increases stack in the same place every round, the circle turns into a hexagon. The calculator starts every other round halfway into the repeat, so the increases are staggered and the edge stays round.
Hat crowns, coasters, rugs and bags
Work the circle to the size you need, then stop increasing. For a hat, the crown is as wide as the hat’s circumference divided by π: the hat size chart works it out.
