How to tell which terms a pattern uses

Look for a stitch only one side has. Single crochet (sc) and half double (hdc) are US only; half treble (htr), “miss” and “tension” are UK. If a pattern only says “double crochet”, check its stitch guide or the designer’s country: Australian, New Zealand and Irish patterns usually use UK terms.

Hook sizes differ too: the hook size converter matches old UK numbers with millimetres and US letters.
