Started learning Crochet in the Freshman year Marisa Shoemaker now owns a lovely crochet business called Monster Man Crochet.
Friends are always awesome and when they unknowingly teach you a beautiful skill they are the best. When we asked Marisa how she got to know about this lovely art called Crochet she said, “I learned basic stitches while sitting in the cafeteria my freshman year of college. One of my friends had taught me, and I was hooked!”
Oh, tell us about it!!! All of us reading this here were instantly hooked to this art and jumped in the ocean all by ourselves. Further, she tells us how she wanted to learn more and went to the YouTube University, “I never did finish the blanket I started, I actually still have it in one of my many WIP bags lol. I then wanted to keep learning, and learned how to make a beanie from YouTube.”
So the business started and the first sale was through Facebook as she tells us, “I had posted a beanie I had made on my personal Facebook page, and someone asked if I could make them one!”
Family support is always something all of us seek. When you have someone standing behind you, believing in you, encouraging you it all becomes so easy. Marisa tells us how her family is so supportive and how they love what she does, “My sister is a constant walking advertisement for me, and my go-to model when I need one. And my parents are constantly talking about my nonprofit work with all their friends.”
Amigurumis are something that all of us think about trying but only a few reach the starting point itself. For me, I just get overwhelmed by the look of it, the patterns, the shapes. But Marisa here loves the Amiguumis, “I love making amigurumi that people wouldn’t imagine as a doll like my uterus rice socks, those are such a hit! And oversized Amis, like my dragons and unicorns.”
“There is no innovation and creativity without failure. Period.”
– Brené Brown
Fighting anxiety even with her crafts Marisa tells us how being perfectionist becomes a problem sometimes, “I am not the first person or the last who will admit that anxiety is my biggest character flaw. I’m a perfectionist, and this controls my anxiety more than I’d like. However, after doing what was the best for her, she is now doing good, “Recently, through the help of a therapist, I’ve been helping myself and my business not go off into that deep end of self-doubt. I’ve learned the hard way that my creativity isn’t always going to be perfect, and that’s okay. ”
Marisa tells all of us crafters how we should be kind to ourselves, “Be kind to yourself. We’re always our own worst critic, and nothing is ever as bad as it seems in the moment.”
This is so very true, we sometimes feel we aren’t doing that good, our work isn’t as good as someones else or we can’t follow the pattern correctly and many more problems about our business and the day to day life. But we don’t think how the picture would be from someone else’s eye. There might be people who are looking up to us because we were strong enough to think differently and start our own business. People who don’t know this Art always go crazy when they see our new creations and they love it. Do not judge yourself and be very harsh. We need to love ourselves first if we want others to love us.
Marisa loves doing charity work and is associated with a lovely Nonprofit Organisation and loves crafting for them. She tells us how she loves it, “I spend a lot of my time crafting for a nonprofit called ‘Feel Better Friends‘ that creates custom look-alike dolls for kiddos with fatal and/or debilitating injuries or illnesses. We include all of their scars, wigs if necessary, and medical equipment for their little twins. We’re always in need of additional volunteers!” Also, she is a cat mom to two rescue babies and loves working out and hanging out with my god kids.
We find inspiration in people around us and Marisa is one such person who inspires us by making such lovely crochet goodies that we all love. We are happy we got to know you Marisa. Kudos to you !!!
