“Be Kind to Yourself” – Sarah Prather’s (SarahDeeCrochet) Interview

Sarah Prather-SarahDeeCrochet

In the year 2014 when Sarah Prather was half way through her pregnancy she was put on bedrest. Taking advantage of her circumstances, she started crocheting then and now she has turned it into an awesome business SarahDeeCrochet

Taking inspiration from her best friend she started crocheting and it helped her with dealing her depression and anxiety issues. So she started with lots of supplies and unending YouTube Videos. She would watch as many as she could.

Her first sale was through Facebook and it was literally by chance. She shares with us, “My first sale was actually kind of an accident. I made a simple granny square blanket and posted a picture on my personal Facebook page. The response was so unexpected, and long story short, it sold itself. “

Seeing this huge demand of handmade products in and around her area and her country, Sarah decided to open an Etsy Shop. Being drawn to baby items mostly, she makes Amigurumi, Blankets and Lovies.

Like most of us Crocheters Sarahs family is very much with her in every way. In her case what her Mom told her turned out to be true, “My mom always says “It takes a village” to be successful. I am so thankful to have such a wonderful village to support me in all my adventures. Words can never express my appreciation for my family.

Isn’t this amazing, when the whole village is standing behind you like a rock and supports you in your handmade business!!!

Recently Sarah has started publishing her own patterns and throws some light on how she feels about this new side of the crochet world “I learn from others, while also trying to find myself as an artist. I think it is important to learn and grow everyday. There are so many talented designers out there, I am so grateful for the opportunity to share my designs with the world.” Also, she is the same like all of us – designers and crocheters, restless untill something is complete in terms of design. “There are so many patterns for “lovies” and baby type comforters, but I always had a vision in my mind. I can never seem to “rest” mentally, until it comes to life.”

“Sometimes the smallest things, take up the most room in your heart” – Winnie the Pooh

Other than crochet, she loves to cook and bake lovely goodies for her family! Being a mom of young kids she spends a lot of time with them and she loves doing so and cherishing each and every moment of it. Also, like many of us her affinity towards crafts started when she was a kid, she explains how, “I have always been drawn to yarn, as a little girl my dad taught me how to macrame. After that it was finger knitting, and making friendship bracelets/anklets of all kinds.”

She suggests, as an entrepreneur/crafter one should never be very hard on themselves. Being kind to yourself is the key. The world and the internet is a very large place and full of beautifully talented people. Comparing your work to others is realy not a good idea. She tells us “Know that you are where you need to be in your craft. Be confident in your work “

Oh, and as if this is not all you would love to know what Sarah did before she became a stay at home mom. She has been a Musician for more than 23 years. She excitedly tells us, “My main instrument is the flute. I have played the piccolo, oboe, and french horn as well. I spent my High School years in marching band and even spent a year in ASU’s marching band.

And there is more, “I worked for 12 years as a Cosmetologist before I became a stay at home mom, during my third pregnancy.” Isn’t that awesome, like how did she even manage to do all this. We are amazed and so happy we found her. She is a Mom of three amazing boys. Emmet is almost 9, Hans is 3, and Quin Bear is 15 months old!

We are so happpy we got a chance to Interview Sarah. She is a whole package. An awesome Mom, Experienced Musician, professional Cosmetologist, a confident crafter and a lovely and hard working person. And as she believes, currently “Crochet” occupies the most room in her heart.
